1. Who We Are

CampScout (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a campsite review platform that helps campers find the best individual sites at campgrounds across the United States. Our website is available at campscout.org.

If you have questions about this policy, contact us at hello@campscout.org.

2. Information We Collect

Account information

When you create an account, we receive basic profile information from your chosen sign-in provider (Google, Facebook, or email). This includes your name, email address, and profile picture. We do not receive or store your social media passwords.

Content you submit

Reviews, ratings, and any other content you post on CampScout are stored in our database and associated with your account. This content may be displayed publicly to other users.

Usage data

We collect anonymized analytics about how the site is used — pages visited, features clicked, and general performance metrics. This data does not identify you personally and is used solely to improve the product.

Cookies and local storage

We use cookies to keep you signed in and to remember your preferences. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To create and manage your account
  • To display your reviews and content on the platform
  • To send transactional communications related to your account (e.g., password resets)
  • To understand how the site is used and improve it over time
  • To moderate content and enforce our community guidelines

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising purposes.

4. How We Share Your Information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers. We use third-party services to operate the platform (listed in Section 5 below). These providers process data on our behalf under data processing agreements.
  • Public content. Reviews and ratings you submit are displayed publicly and associated with your first name and last initial (e.g., “Alex R.”).
  • Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

5. Third-Party Services

CampScout uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policy:

When you sign in with Google or Facebook, those providers’ own privacy policies also apply to data shared during the authentication process.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information and submitted content for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time by contacting us at hello@campscout.org, after which your personal information will be removed from our systems within 30 days. Public reviews may be anonymized rather than deleted to preserve the integrity of campground data.

7. Data Security & Protection

We take the security of your information seriously and implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

These measures include:

  • Encryption in transit: All data transmitted between your device and our services is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
  • Secure infrastructure: Our application is hosted on trusted infrastructure providers that follow industry-standard security practices, including Vercel and Neon/PostgreSQL.
  • Access controls: Access to personal data is restricted to authorized systems and personnel who need it to operate and maintain the service.
  • Authentication security: User authentication is handled by Clerk, which provides secure, industry-standard authentication flows and protections.
  • Data minimization: We only collect and store the minimum amount of personal information necessary to provide our services.
  • Monitoring and safeguards: We use monitoring and logging to detect and help prevent unauthorized access or misuse of our systems.

While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Google API Data

If you choose to sign in using Google, any information received from Google APIs is used solely to authenticate your account and provide core application functionality. CampScout’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Depending on your location, you may have rights including:

  • Access to the personal data we hold about you

  • Deletion of your account and associated data
  • Objection to or restriction of certain processing

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@campscout.org and we will respond within 30 days.

9. Children's Privacy

CampScout is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of CampScout after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
